Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

Antioxidant, Cardiovascular Health, Cellular Health

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an antioxidant that your body produces naturally. Your cells use it for growth and maintenance. As you age, the levels of CoQ10 decrease. Supplementing with CoQ10 has been shown to benefit many different systems in the body. Coenzyme Q10, also known as Ubiquinone, Ubidecarenone, Coenzyme Q, and abbreviated at times to CoQ10, is a 1,4-benzoquinone, where Q refers to the quinone chemical group, and 10 refers to the number of isoprenyl chemical subunits in its tail. This oil-soluble, vitamin-like substance is present in most eukaryotic cells, primarily in the mitochondria.

Features & Benefits
  • CoQ10 helps generate energy in cells. It also serves as an antioxidant to protect cells from oxidative damage caused by excessive amounts of free radicals.
  • Applying CoQ10 to the skin can reduce environmental damage by increasing energy production in the cells, thus promoting antioxidant protection.
  • CoQ10 applied to the skin has been shown to reduce oxidative damage caused by UV rays and decrease the dept of wrinkles. • CoQ10 may decrease oxidative stress in the cells and improve mitochondrial functions, thus helping exercise performance.
Applications
  • Dietary Supplements
  • Functional Foods & Beverages

Mechanism of Action

CoQ10 is a component of the electron transport chain and participates in aerobic cellular respiration, generating energy in the form of ATP. Ninety-five percent of the human body’s energy is generated this way. Therefore, those organs with the highest energy requirements—such as the heart, liver and kidney—have the highest CoQ10 concentrations. There are three redox states of CoQ10: fully oxidized (ubiquinone), semiquinone (ubisemiquinone), and fully reduced (ubiquinol). The capacity of this molecule to exist in a completely oxidized form and a completely reduced form enables it to perform its functions in the electron transport chain, and as an antioxidant, respectively.
