Lutein Esters for Vision & Cognitive Health
Animal Health, Antioxidant, Cognitive Health, Vision Health
OptiLut® is a portfolio of lutein esters created for optimal eye health and healthy aging. Lutein helps support healthy vision and may help reduce the risk of progression to advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). OptiLut® supports macular health and may help to improve visual performance with prolonged screen use in healthy individuals. Lutein and Zeaxanthin have also been shown to benefit cognitive health in all age groups, from infants to late adulthood. OptiLut® lutein esters are extracted and purified from marigold flowers, Tagetes erecta. Lutein esters have been shown to be more bioavailable than free lutein. The exclusive OptiLut® line offered by NutriScience Innovations represents a comprehensive range of marigold lutein ester extracts that deliver high quality at a competitive price point. NutriScience also offers XanMax® Free Lutein : Zeaxanthin for Vision Health. OptiLut® is a registered trademark of NutriScience Innovations, LLC.
Features & Benefits
- A proprietary process is used for the isolation of lutein esters directly from marigold flowers.
- Lutein esters have been shown to be more bioavailable than free lutein/zeaxanthin.
- Lutein esters are converted in the body into free lutein at a 2:1 conversion ratio (20% lutein esters is equivalent to 10% free lutein). – OptiLut® extracts contain small amounts of natural trans-zeaxanthin (typically 3.5% of the total carotenoids).
- Highly bioavailable oil or powder forms as well as an enhanced stability beadlet form are available.
- Fully traceable back to the seeds and farms where harvested.
Applications
- Dietary Supplements
- Functional Foods & Beverages
Mechanism of Action
Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids (colored pigments) and have strong antioxidant properties. In humans, lutein and zeaxanthin can scavenge peroxyl free radicals and promote direct antioxidant activity. Because of their unique chemistry and structure, lutein and zeaxanthin can immerse themselves in fatty brain cell membranes, crossing between the cell’s exterior and interior environments. This stabilizes cell structures and protects against oxidative stress from inside and outside the cell.
Clinical Studies
Vision Health The benefits of lutein for eye health, in particular macular protection, have been well established in both clinical trials and dietary intake studies. The antioxidant protective effects of lutein are known. Lutein slows the progression of AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration). Additionally, lutein has been shown to reduce eye fatigue and support prolonged screen time use. Cognitive Health In 2017, a large-scale longitudinal study found that plasma levels of lutein are associated with improved cognitive function in adults. It was found that supplemented patients experienced significant increases in brain blood flow in areas of the brain vital to cognition and memory. Other studies have demonstrated that lutein supplementation produces a “brain maintenance effect” by shielding against the impact of aging on cognitive performance, and enhancing brain blood flow in the specific areas that support cognitive function.
