Perilla, Perilla frutescens, is an edible, aromatic plant with a long history of culinary and traditional medicinal use. Perilla Seed Extract contains antioxidative flavonoids as aglycons – a unique form without the usual glycosyl unit attached. The flavonoid aglycones include polyphenols such as Luteolin, Apigenin, Chrysoeriol, and Rosemarinic Acid. It has been reported that the antioxidative activity and lipoxygenase inhibitory activity of flavonoid aglycons are stronger than that of corresponding glycosides.
Oral Health: Perilla Seed Extract has antibacterial activity against various pathogenic microorganisms and can be used in oral care (toothpaste and mouthwash) formulations. As an odor neutralizer, Perilla seed extract deodorizes acetaldehyde, ammonia and mercaptans, which are found in tobacco and alcohol breath, and in bad breath (halitosis) in general.
