Mechanism of Action
Specific Transport Mechanism: Ergothioneine is taken up by cells via a specific transporter protein known as the ergothioneine transporter (ETT), also referred to as organic cation transporter novel, type 1 (OCTN1). This transporter is highly expressed in certain tissues, including the liver, kidneys, brain, and immune cells. The presence of this specific transporter suggests that ergothioneine is selectively accumulated in tissues where it is most needed for protection against oxidative stress and other harmful processes.
While in those selected tissues, ergothioneine acts as a direct antioxidant by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), such as superoxide radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and peroxynitrite. By neutralizing these free radicals, it helps protect cellular components (e.g., DNA, proteins, lipids) from oxidative damage.
