Mechanism of Action
Coagulation
- Vitamin K is essential for the synthesis of coagulation proteins, which are necessary for blood clotting and to stop bleeding. Vitamin K is essential to the blood clotting cascade by serving as a cofactor for the γ-carboxylation of vitamin K-dependent (VKD) coagulation factors (including factors II, VII, IX and X) generated in the liver. Vitamin K is also a cofactor for anticoagulation proteins C, S, and Z.
Vascular Calcification
- Vitamin K reduces vascular calcification and is a marker of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin K activates vitamin K-dependent proteins including the matrix Gla protein (MGP) which has a high affinity binding to calcium ion and acts as an inhibitor of vascular mineralization.
Bone Mineralization
- Vitamin K aids in increasing bone strength and bone mineral density. Vitamin K binds to the vitamin K2-dependent protein osteocalcin, and additionally the MGP protein is involved in bone demineralization.
Antioxidant
- Vitamin K is a potent antioxidant and works by scavenging free radicals. This antioxidant effect is relatively new science and is the basis for healthy aging – vitamin K is involved in a redox cycle which has anti-inflammatory, ergogenic (ATP energy producing), DNA repair and other benefits.

Formulating with K2Quest®
K2Quest® is available as an MCT (medium chain triglyceride) based oil at various concentrations –1.3% and 6% Vitamin K2 MK7 oil, which are packaged in 1 kg aluminum and 5 kg plastic bottles. K2Quest® is also available as an MCC (microcrystalline cellulose) based 1% powder, which is packaged in 1 kg and 5 kg laminated film foil and polyethylene pouches. Other concentrations are available. K2Quest® products have a shelf life of 3 years. All vitamin K’s are very sensitive to light and should be handled appropriately.
K2Quest® can be formulated into capsules, tablets, softgels, stick packs and other suitable forms. K2 MK7 is an oil soluble vitamin. Typical doses of K2 MK7 are 45-180 mcg per serving. As an example, a 90 mcg dose of K2 MK7 is contained in 1.5 mg K2Quest® 6% oil.
Regulatory
K2Quest® K2 MK7 is self-affirmed GRAS. According to FDA and EFSA, K2 MK7 is safe and is approved for use in supplements and foods. The EFSA upper limit is 5.4 mcg/kg body weight/day K2 MK7, which equates to 378 mcg/day (70 kg adult) or 108 mcg (20 kg child).
